Following the decision of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) on June 13th to phase out the use of raceday Lasix in all graded and listed races for two-year-old from 2014, for three-year-olds from 2015 and for all ages from 2016, IFHA Chairman, Louis Romanet applauded the decision and reiterated the importance of drug free racing.
Romanet said: "I am extremely glad to learn that the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has made the right decision to ban Lasix and I am convinced that this decision will surely be a historical milestone for all racing sectors in the US.
"The IFHA has been taking a strong position in favor of a ‘No Medication Policy for Racing’ and this policy was again unanimously endorsed recently at the Executive Council convened on 2nd April in Paris. The ‘No Medication Policy for Racing’ is important from many aspects, especially from perspectives of safety of jockeys and horses, the quality of the breed and perception of the public.
"I am sure that our international racing community will also strongly support this bold step forward and IFHA will pledge to give its full support to further development of this policy into other racing jurisdictions in the US.’
