Andre Fabre believes the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby is an ideal race for Waldgeist when the French-trained colt goes for gold at the Curragh on Saturday.

The son of Galileo heads to Ireland with some eyecatching form, having finished a short-head second to Brametot in the French Derby at Chantilly earlier in the month.

Fabre last won the Irish Derby with Hurricane Run, who wore the same Gestut Ammerland colours as Waldgeist when the horse was successful in 2005.

Like Hurricane Run, Waldgeist is also part-owned by members of the Coolmore partnership.

Fabre, who also won the Irish Derby with Winged Love in 1995, told the Irish Times: " It's a good opportunity for him.

"I'm sure the pace will be sensible. He stays well and has good acceleration.

"I think the Curragh is a beautiful track, very well designed.

"You cannot be unlucky there. It's a very fair course and I've never seen a messy race there."
